Problem: The COVID pandemic caused widespread learning loss in ELA while also amplifying gaps across racial and socioeconomic lines.

Solution: Use your ESSER funds to provide your teachers and students with tools to quickly address and correct learning loss.

Short, Short, BIG! was built during the pandemic by a team of literacy experts with the explicit goal of remediating the skills that were lost during COVID (or never attained).

  • Over 97% of educators reported loss of learning by their students over the past year when compared with children in previous years. (Horace Mann Education Corp.)

  • Children have lost months of reading and writing skills, with students of color faring worse. (McKinsey & Company)

  • More than 180 countries mandated temporary school closures leaving over 1.6 billion students out of school (U.S. News)

Short, Short, BIG! is ready to teach upon arrival and will help you attain measurable ELA growth in just ten weeks.

Decades of research show a correlation between grade level literacy and quality of life.

In U.S. education, we typically organize students into groups by grade level. However, we often take this a step further by categorizing students into “subgroups.” These “subgroups” are most commonly based on:

  • Race

  • Economic well being

  • English language readiness

  • Gender

The measurable difference between subgroups are what’s known as “Achievement Gaps.”

Two-thirds of adolescent American students are not proficient in reading and writing*

Making matters worse, the data shows wide racial disparities in achievement.

The value of literacy has been well-researched. Some of the most significant benefits of being able to read and write well include:

  • Less prone to a life of poverty

  • Longer life expectancy

  • Lower infant mortality rates

  • Lower incarceration rates

  • Lower teen pregnancy rates

  • Greater community involvement

Short, Short, BIG! uses a research-based approach designed to closing achievement gaps and getting students to grade level by means of meeting these learners where they are and using a proven teaching model to elevate ELA performance in reading and writing.
